Review

A Date-Driven Online Spend Accelerator

The CIMB e Credit Card is a digital-first card designed around a very specific usage pattern. Its headline feature is the ability to earn up to 12x Bonus Points on online shopping, auto-billing, and contactless transactions, but only on the 28th day of each month. As such, the card’s value is highly dependent on deliberate spend timing rather than everyday usage.

The upside is capped by a relatively low ceiling. Bonus Points earned under the 12x promotion are limited to 20,000 Bonus Points per statement cycle. This cap can be reached quickly with moderate spending, after which additional transactions revert to the base earn rate. As a result, the card works best for users who plan and concentrate eligible spending within a narrow window.

From a cost perspective, the card is easy to hold. All existing cardholders enjoy a full annual fee waiver from 1 January 2026 to 31 December 2026. From 1 January 2027 onwards, the annual fee is waived with a minimum total annual spend of RM6,000, keeping long-term holding costs low.

The CIMB e Credit Card is not intended to replace a primary rewards or travel card. Instead, it functions best as a supplementary tool to extract incremental value from scheduled online purchases, subscriptions, or deferred spending that can be timed around the 28th of each month.

Verdict: This card is best suited for users who are comfortable planning their online and contactless spending around a fixed monthly date. For those seeking consistent, all-month rewards or higher long-term points accumulation, the restrictive timing and low points cap significantly limit its appeal.

Pros

  • Up to 12x Bonus Points on online, auto-billing and contactless spend on the 28th of each month
  • Low long-term holding cost with annual fee waiver conditions
  • Suitable for scheduled online payments and subscriptions
  • Simple structure with no category enrolment required
  • Works well as a supplementary card

Cons

  • 12x Bonus Points only apply on a single day each month
  • Bonus Points capped at 20,000 per statement cycle
  • Limited value outside the promotional spend date
  • Not suitable as a primary rewards or travel card
  • Requires active spend planning to extract value
